Old kwanza notes will no longer be accepted as of this Friday

The former family of kwanzas will no longer circulate as of this Friday. Citizens have until the last day of the year, December 31, to use the 2012 series banknotes in payment transactions.

As of Saturday, January 1, 2022, the old kwanza family will no longer be accepted. However, citizens will still be able to exchange their money.

According to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), in Cunene province, merchants and citizens say they are prepared to make the move, admitting that they have already taken precautions not to reach the last day with old notes.

Ivone Mutelifa, a civil servant, in statements to RNA, considered that the time in which the two series of kwanzas circulated simultaneously was enough for citizens to adapt to the new family of kwanzas: "I think it is high time to leave to use (...). I think they gave a one-year extension, I think it's enough time for us to prepare, get used to the grades, know how to use, know how to differentiate".

In turn, Ivo Tuapanda, social motivator, admitted that the dissemination of information played a crucial role for citizens with old banknotes to deposit them in banks.

"Although they are no longer used as payment notes, they can still be exchanged at bank branches," he indicated.

Ricardo Rómulo, an economist, said that setting the deadline for the end of payment operations with old banknotes is a "normal procedure".
