With the entry of the new note of 2000 kwanzas, it is only missing to introduce in the market the new note of 5000 kwanzas, expected to arrive in January next year.
"The 2000 kwanzas banknote that, in shades of green, pays homage to one of the wonders of Angola - the Serra da Leba, is printed on a material similar to plastic (polymer) and has, in a transparent window cut out, the representation of the figure of the 'Thinker' and the name of the banknote in translucent ink, with projection to both sides of it. It also has a second transparent window with the shape of a geometric figure representing the traditional musical instrument 'Omakola'," can be read in a note published on the website of the National Bank of Angola (BNA).
It should be remembered that the new family of kwanzas entered into circulation on July 30th, with the release of the 200 kwanzas banknote. Meanwhile, 500 and 1000 kwanzas banknotes have also been introduced.
However, the introduction of the new banknotes does not invalidate the 2012 series, which continues to be valid and accepted as a means of payment simultaneously with the new banknotes until 31 December next year. From January 1, 2022 the old kwanza family will no longer be accepted.
The Angolans will have until 2025 to exchange the old kwanzas notes for the new ones. The exchange can be done at commercial banks until December 2021 and at BNA facilities until 2025.
The new 2020 series is inspired "by the greatness of independent Angola and landscapes of unique beauty, contains elements of our cultural identity, symbolizing our path as a sovereign country and thus enhancing our historical trajectory. Another great change is that the new notes do not have the face of the former President, José Eduardo dos Santos.
