Luanda light rail included in 41 public-private partnerships until 2021

The Government announced that work is underway to implement the Operational Plan for Structuring Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) until December 2021, including the construction of a surface meter in Luanda.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), the plan, which comprises an indicative list of 41 potential investment projects to be structured in the form of public-private partnership, establishes the stages of preparation, negotiation and launch of the procedure for establishing PPP.

The plan, approved this week at the ninth session of the Economic Commission of the Council of Ministers, chaired by President João Lourenço, also presents a timetable for its structuring.

In a statement sent to Lusa, MEP said that the start of work for the implementation of these PPPs is taking place with the other ministerial departments.

Among the 41 potential projects, there are several from the public works and spatial planning sector with the authorities signaling the construction of the new bridge over the Kwanza River, the completion of the construction and management of the centrality of Saurimo and the construction of a highway in the corridor North South.

For the transport sector, the authorities highlight 10 potential projects, including the construction of Luanda's light rail, the railway connection between Angola and Zambia by the Benguela Railway - extension of the center corridor, railway connection of the Railway from Luanda to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo to connect Katanga - northern corridor, and the rail link of the Mozambique Railways, Namibia and Victoria Falls.

In the field of energy and water, the plan includes several projects with emphasis on the construction and operation of the combined cycle plant of Soyo II and the management of water supply and sanitation services in Cabinda.

The construction and operation of the Mulenvos solid waste recovery unit, Luanda, construction and operation of the Cabo Ledo tourist development pole unit and the exploration of the Okavango tourist development pole unit are among the seven major projects in the sector of tourism.

In relation to the construction and operation of the Mulenvos solid waste recovery unit, MEP underlined that management and exploration will not only be for the disposal of waste, "but also for management focused on recycling".

The social action, family and women promotion sector also includes several investment projects to be structured in the PPP modality, with emphasis on the rehabilitation and exploitation of the Chinguar agro-industrial village and the rehabilitation and exploitation of the Quicabo agro-industrial village.

A sports internship center in the Special Economic Zone (EEZ) Luanda-Bengo is on the list of projects for the youth and sports sector, namely its restructuring, equipping and management.
