In a statement, published on its official website, the Paris Club indicates that the decision was taken in the context of the Suspension of Debt Service and explains that Angola was considered "eligible to benefit from the initiative". For this reason, "the representatives of the Paris Club's creditor countries agreed to grant the Republic of Angola a suspension of debt service due between 1 May and 31 December 2020".

The note also reveals that Angola will have to use this money to "mitigate the health, economic and social impact of the covid-19 crisis. The country has also pledged to seek all other official bilateral creditors to obtain "debt service treatment that is in accordance with the agreed terms sheet" with the Paris Club.

The Paris Club creditors have also given an assurance that they will continue to coordinate with other interested parties the implementation of the Debt Service Suspension and are willing to extend the debt service suspension period - a hypothesis to be discussed at the G20 meeting in November in Riyadh.

The Paris Club aims to help countries with economic difficulties at a financial level. It was founded in 1956, is based in Paris and has 22 members.

The agreement with Angola was signed by Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom and USA. Australia, Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland also participated as observers.
