Covid-19: cases rise again as country mourns death of first health professional

Angola has registered 39 new cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 851, announced a government official, who also mourned the death of the first health professional due to the disease in the country.

The Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, began this Thursday the usual epidemiological bulletin released in Luanda, with a minute's silence by the doctor and a fire chief, "two tireless fighters" against covid-19 that are part of the 33 deaths currently counted in the country.

The 39 new cases are all from Luanda, aged between one and 73, 15 male and 14 female. Ten people were also recovered.

The Health Officer also reported that one case that was in isolation in Namibe province did the molecular-based test with negative results.

Angola thus rose to 851 confirmed cases of covid-19, of which 33 died, 236 were recovered and 582 were active.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 627,000 lives and infected more than 15.2 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Africa, there are 16,434 confirmed deaths in more than 770,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics on that continent.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (2350 cases and 51 deaths), despite having revised downwards the cases after several days without updates, followed by Cape Verde (2190 cases and 21 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (1949 cases and 26 deaths), Mozambique (1582 cases and 11 deaths), Angola (851 infected and 33 deaths) and Sao Tome and Principe (746 cases and 14 deaths).
