CDC Africa points out Angola as a good example in combating the pandemic

The director of the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC) pointed to Angola and Mozambique as two examples of pandemic control, taking into account the ratio between number of cases and population.

"Angola and Mozambique, with around a thousand cases, are examples of countries that have done very well in controlling the pandemic considering the population they have, and we have to understand what they are doing well to replicate in other countries," said John Nkengasong during the CDC Africa weekly press conference.

"Nigeria is a very big country, with 200 million inhabitants, and infections by covid-19 are in the 34 or 35 thousand, so we have to praise the government and CDC Nigeria, because without their efforts the numbers would be huge, just look at what is happening in Brazil and India; the numbers in Nigeria are high, yes, but we have to put them in context ", defended the director of CDC Africa.

At the weekly press conference, John Nkengasong said that Africa currently has about 750,000 cases of people infected with the new coronavirus, of which about 16,000 have been killed, demonstrating a 2.1 percent mortality rate.

"The good news is that there were 410,000 people who recovered, more than half, which is very encouraging," said the official, adding that the disease is distributed almost equally by gender: 49 percent of those infected are men and 51 percent are women.

Five countries account for 75 percent of cases, starting with South Africa, which has 51 percent of all cases recorded on the continent, followed by Egypt (11 percent), Nigeria (5 percent), Ghana (3.4 percent) and Algeria (3.1 percent).
