CPLP to move forward with common core public health degree in Portuguese-speaking countries

The Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs announced this Thursday in Bissau that the CPLP will move forward with a common core degree in public health across all Portuguese-speaking countries.

Paulo Rangel said that "a very significant declaration" was approved this Thursday at the Council of Ministers of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).

"A Portuguese idea that is moving forward is the creation of a degree in public health with a common foundation in all Portuguese-speaking countries," he stated, on the sidelines of a visit to the Guinea-Bissau Military Hospital.

Rangel emphasized that "public health is (...), particularly in developing countries, the most important health tool, because it is essentially intended to prevent disease and can avoid the most problematic phase of treatment."

The Portuguese leader emphasized that, "in addition, it is closely linked (...) to the issue of youth, which came from the [previous] São Tomé presidency," but also "to the idea of food sovereignty, which is the motto of the Guinea-Bissau presidency, which (...) has to do with health care," since "adequate nutrition is, obviously, also a tool for public health and prevention."

The minister had just visited, with the Guinean Minister of Health, the Guinea-Bissau Military Hospital, which has benefited from "deep cooperation between Portugal—and the Portuguese health system—and Guinea-Bissau (...) with fantastic results," he assured.

"In terms of statistics, there are indeed substantial improvements due to the use of telemedicine and the interaction between Portuguese and Guinean professionals," he emphasized.

Paulo Rangel is participating in the CPLP Summit, taking place in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, the country now assuming the organization's presidency for two years, succeeding São Tomé and Príncipe.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government is scheduled for this Friday and was preceded by other initiatives, such as the meeting of focal points, the Food Security Council, the Permanent Concertation Committee, at ambassadorial level, and the Council of Ministers, which brings together the heads of diplomacy of the nine member states.

The CPLP includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.
