The Angolan Academy of Letters (AAL), cited by Angop, classified the attribution of the title as "very fair".
Recalling that Pepetela's work is allusive to the history of Angola, the academy applauded the distinction hoping that this title will be a gateway to the valorization of Angolan intellectuals.
Born in Benguela in 1941, Pepetela has won several literary prizes, especially the National Literature Prize, in 1981, the National Culture and Arts Prize, in 2002, and the Camões Prize (1997), among others.
