The Portuguese-African community in Canada supports projects for children in Angola.

Around one hundred people participated this Saturday in Hamilton, Canada, in a charity dinner organized by the Hope and Angels Foundation, whose mission is to support vulnerable children in Angola and promote self-sufficiency.

The organization's founder, Esperança Alfico, explained to Lusa that the funds raised will be used to boost a family farming project in Angola.

"Many families have unused backyards. If they are used to grow tomatoes, cabbage, or other vegetables, this can help not only with food but also with income generation," she stated.

Having lived in Canada for 25 years, she emphasized that the focus is on changing mindsets and promoting self-sufficiency.

"We've come to the conclusion that it's not poverty that hurts us, but rather a lack of vision. If we work to become self-sufficient, we can break cycles of dependence and give families hope," she emphasized.

The foundation has been in existence since 2016 and has transformed the lives of many children: "There are parents who can't afford to pay for their children's education or provide a daily meal for them. We've created spaces where these children spend the day, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with support, food, and protection. It's a refuge that allows them to grow with dignity," he highlighted.

Alfico appealed to the Portuguese-African community to continue supporting the project through the foundation's website (www.hopeandangels.net) and social media.
