President of the National Assembly congratulates the basketball team

The president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, was one of several figures who reacted to the national team's victory in Afrobasket, considering this achievement historic, which is seen as "a symbol of the unity, strength and courage of the Angolan people."

"It is with great pride that we celebrate a historic moment that goes beyond sport and stands as a symbol of our national unity. The victory of the national basketball team, winning the 12th African championship title in the final of the 31st edition of FIBA ​​Afrobasket, represents much more than a sporting triumph: it confirms the strength and courage of the Angolan people. After twelve years, Angola returns to the top of African basketball, proving that united we are stronger," said Carolina Cerqueira.

For its part, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) highlighted this victory as a moment of great joy for Angolans and a demonstration of the country's talent, determination, and sporting prowess.

"May this visit serve as a milestone and an incentive for youth to continue to assert themselves as an indispensable factor of development and stability for the country's future," the message stated.

The Executive Secretariat of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) congratulated the national men's basketball team for its "extraordinary achievement in Afrobasket 2025," a victory it considered "a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and talent" of the national athletes, "who represented Angola with bravery."

"We walk with you, we always believe in your ability, and we dream of the final. Today, with great joy, we celebrate the victory of the Angolans and the affirmation of our identity in African sports. This triumph is more than a medal; it is a symbol of unity and resilience of the Angolan people."

Angola hosted the 31st edition of Afrobasket, which featured 16 African teams. The Portuguese-speaking country won its 12th African title with the senior men's national basketball team, defeating Mali 70-43.

With 12 continental titles, Angola reinforced in this 2025 edition its historic position as the most awarded team, with victories in 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013.
