Kissama Foundation celebrates three decades with new projects

The 30th anniversary of the Kissama Foundation, the publication of a guide on mammals and the conservation of the Giant Sable Antelope as a symbol of the nation, dominated the audience granted by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, to environmentalist Vladimir Russo, this Friday, in Luanda.

Upon leaving the hearing, Vladimir Russo emphasized that the anniversary celebration of the Kissama Foundation, of which he is executive director for the environment, established on September 18, 1995, will include a conference on conservation, research, and information, as well as a review of the main achievements and challenges recorded over the last three decades.

He noted that ongoing projects include the publication of a guide on mammals, to be released in September, also part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of National Independence. The publication aims to strengthen scientific knowledge and support biodiversity preservation efforts.

Regarding the Giant Sable Antelope, considered an emblematic species and national symbol, the environmentalist reported that there are currently approximately 305 specimens identified in the Cangandala and Luando nature reserves.

Despite this growth, he warned that the species remains endangered, requiring greater conservation efforts.

Vladimir Russo also emphasized the importance of creating conservation areas and involving young people, particularly young graduates and rural communities, in biodiversity-related activities.

In addition to environmental protection, he advocated job creation as one of the sector's priorities.

During the meeting, initiatives to preserve other species, such as sea turtles and forest elephants, were also discussed, aiming to maintain ecological balance and promote Angola as a benchmark in African wildlife conservation.

The director of the Kissama Foundation reiterated the institution's willingness to work in partnership with the Executive branch, training staff and strengthening biodiversity programs.
