British magazine Songlines honors band Ayom inspired by "Afro-Lusophone"

Ayom, a Barcelona-based band that brings together musicians of Brazilian, Angolan and Southern European origin, won the Best Group award this Thursday at the British magazine Songlines awards.

The based band brings together Brazilian singer and percussionist Jabu Morales, percussionists Walter Martins from Angola and Timoteo Grignani from Greece, Luso-Angolan guitarist Ricardo Quinteira, Italian accordionist Alberto Becucci, and Italian bassist Francesco Valente, who settled in Lisbon.

The band's debut album, "Ayom", which had already won the "Top of the World" distinction in the magazine's January issue, was recorded in Portugal in 2019.

The compositions bear witness to influences from the music of Brazil, Cape Verde and Angola, in an "Afro-Lusophone connection" to "Mediterranean flavors," as Songlines highlights.

Orkesta Mendoza, from Arizona, USA, Tamikrest, from the Tuareg people, and the French-Algerian Zoufris Maracas were the other nominees for Best Group.

Fado singer Mariza, who had her most recent work, "Mariza Canta Amália", released last year, among the five finalists for the Best European Album award, was overtaken by the album "Singer of Tales", by Bosnian-Herzegovina musician Damir Imamovic, according to the list of winners published on the magazine's website.

Besides Imamovic, also nominated for best European album were Sam Lee, from the UK, with "Old Wow", and the French group Cocanha, with "Puput". Mariza already won this award in 2019, with the album "Mariza".

The Best Artist award went to Isaraelite singer of Iranian origin Liraz Charhi, who had to record her album "Zan" underground, to protect the Iranian musicians who worked with her.

"Zan," as Songlines writes, pays "a tribute to the women of Iran, from 'child brides' [of arranged marriages] to freedom fighters."

Yilian Cañizares, of Cuban origin, Argentinian Melingo and Bosnian Damir Imamovic were the other candidates for Best Artist.

Songlines magazine's music awards are intended to "celebrate the extraordinary amount of musical talent around the world," according to the British magazine.
