The data were advanced in Luanda during the presentation of the preliminary results of the study on the coffee value chain in Angola, prepared by the European Alliance on Agricultural Knowledge for Development (Agrinatura) in collaboration with the Ministries of Economy and Planning and Agriculture and Forestry.

Bernardo Piazzardi, Agrinatura researcher, who presented the provisional results of the economic analysis of the study, funded by the European Union (EU), said that the current coffee value chain "is still in deficit".

For her part, Margarida Lima, researcher of the Agronomy Institute of Lisbon and member of Agrinatura, who presented the social component of the study, argued that the facilitation of land legalization "is fundamental" for the development of the coffee value chain.

According to the Portuguese researcher, in the field of land rights it was found that "rarely" land ownership in the referred coffee production areas of Angola "is totally legalized", persisting "some conflicts of ownership".

"There are still parcels to be divided, that is, at the end of the reorganization and possession of the land there are still situations of disorganization," said Margarida Lima, noting that access to water in coffee-growing regions "does not seem to be a constraint.

With regard to gender and social inclusion, she stressed, the culture of coffee, referring to the women contacted, especially in the regions of Uíje and Kwanza Norte, is dominated by men.

The study was financed by the Food Security, Nutrition and Rural Development Unit of the European Union.
