EU provides 12 million euros for Angolan coffee development

The European Union (EU) provided 12 million euros to strengthen the Angolan Production Support Programme, Export Diversification and Import Substitution (Prodesi), mainly for the development of the coffee value chain.

The information was transmitted this Wednesday in Luanda by the European Union Ambassador to Angola, Tomas Ulicny, at the opening of a 'workshop' to present and validate preliminary results on the study of the coffee value chain in Angola.

Over five years of its implementation, the study aims to "improve growth" and the "contribution" of the coffee value chain to the diversification of the national economy, through "capacity building" of institutions such as the National Coffee Institute of Angola and the Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency of Angola.

The study was conducted by the European Alliance on Agricultural Knowledge for Development (Agrinatura), in collaboration with the Ministries of Economy and Planning and Agriculture and Forestry, and financed by the Food Security, Nutrition and Rural Development Unit of the European Union.

According to the European diplomat, the study also aims to "facilitate dialogue" between different private actors involved in the value chain, improve certification processes and coffee quality by "promoting and facilitating exports".

At the same time, the head of the EU delegation in Angola stressed that investment in this "priority sector" for the Government would be encouraged.

The productive, economic, social and environmental aspects are the axes of the study on the coffee value chain in Angola, which is a 'first step' towards the 'growth, inclusion and sustainability' of the Angolan coffee sector.
