Year-on-year inflation slows to 20.74 percent in May

The annual inflation rate in Angola slowed to 20.74 percent in May, the lowest value since January 2024, while monthly inflation maintained the downward trend that began at the beginning of this year, standing at 1.17 percent.

According to official data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the monthly variation represents a slight slowdown of 0.17 percentage points compared to April (22.32 percent year-on-year), while accumulated inflation since the beginning of the year reached 7.37 percent.

The "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" class continues to be the main driver of inflation, with an increase of 1.25 percent compared to April and a contribution of 0.76 percentage points to the monthly variation of the National Consumer Price Index (IPCN), equivalent to around 65 percent of the total.

In addition to food, increases were also notable in the classes of "Miscellaneous goods and services" (1.63 percent), "Health" (1.41 percent), "Furniture, household equipment and maintenance" (1.31 percent) and "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" (1.28 percent).

By province, Cabinda recorded the largest monthly variation (1.76 percent), followed by Cuanza Norte (1.69 percent) and Bié (1.54 percent).

On the other hand, Cunene (0.65 percent), Zaire (0.82 percent) and Luanda (0.93 percent) recorded the lowest price increases.

In the province of Luanda, which represents a significant weight in the IPCN, year-on-year inflation fell to 19.78 percent, 2.41 percentage points less than in the previous month.

The category with the largest variation was also "Miscellaneous goods and services" (1.92 percent), with food accounting for the largest individual contribution to the increase in the index, with 0.60 percentage points, or around 65 percent of the total variation.

Inflation in Angola has been slowing since the peak of 31.09 percent observed in July 2024.
