Covid-19: Two cases in 3000 passengers that arrived in the country since Saturday

Two of the more than 3,000 passengers who arrived in Angola at the weekend tested positive for covid-19, the government announced, adding that health authorities will investigate whether it is the new strain of the virus.

Since Saturday, when landing tests (antigen) began to be carried out on passengers arriving at Luanda's 4 de Fevereiro Airport, around 3000 people from different countries arrived in the country, two of whom tested positive, one Nigerian and a Brazilian, said the Secretary of State for Public Health.

According to Franco Mufinda, in the epidemiological balance, in Luanda, the cases were recorded on a TAAG flight on the 16th, from São Paulo (Brazil), and on another Emirates flight, from Dubai, on Sunday.

Angola, which will suspend direct flights with Portugal, Brazil and South Africa as of January 24, already required an RT-PCR pre-boarding test, carried out up to 72 hours before the trip.

"The sequencing of the two cases will be carried out to determine whether this is the new variant," continued Franco Mufinda, recommending passengers on flights where infections were detected to double their vigilance for any symptoms (shortness of breath, loss of smell, tiredness , fever or cough, among others).

All passengers who tested negative will have to observe home quarantine for 10 days, while those who tested positive will go to institutional isolation. To leave the quarantine and obtain an epidemiological discharge, they must be subjected to a new rapid test.

Mufinda recalled that failure to comply with the quarantine implies coercive referral to an institutional center and the payment of a fine of 250,000 kwanzas, urging the population to report possible violators.

Angola has diagnosed 51 more cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, three deaths and 330 people have been recovered from the disease.

The country accounts for a total of 18,926 cases, with 439 deaths, 16,647 considered recovered and 1810 active, of which nine are in critical condition and eight are serious.
