"The National Bank of Angola launches the 5000 kwanzas note of the new 2020 Series, on February 4, 2021, marking the date of celebration of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation," revealed the BNA, in a statement published on its website.
This is the fifth note to be introduced to the market, after the process of moving the kwanza family began in July last year. The new 5000 kwanzas banknote joins the 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 kwanzas that are already in circulation.
"In lilac tones, the 5000 kwanzas banknote of the 2020 Series is produced in cotton substrate, containing new security features, including a watermark, figure of the 'Thinker', with projection to both sides of the banknote," indicates the central bank.
The banknote also "pays tribute to the Historic Centre of M'Banza Kongo, which was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and where Kulumbimbi is located, ruins of what is considered the first church built south of the Sahara and which stands out for its unique architecture".
It is worth remembering that the new kwanzas family came into circulation on July 30, 2020, with the release of the 200 kwanzas banknote. In September, October and November the 500, 1000 and 2000 kwanzas banknotes were introduced.
It should be noted that the entry of the new series of kwanzas into the market does not invalidate the old banknotes, which will continue to be accepted as payment until 31 December 2021.
From January 2022 onwards, the old kwanzas family will no longer be accepted. The Angolans have until 2025 to exchange their old banknotes. This exchange must be made in commercial banks until December of this year and in BNA's facilities until 2025.
