UNITA advances with the PR dismissal process at the Constitutional Court

UNITA announced this Wednesday that it will submit to the Constitutional Court the process of dismissal of the President, João Lourenço, as well as another against the “illegal vote” in the National Assembly to “force” MPLA deputies to comply with the Constitution.

The announcement was made by the leader of the parliamentary group of the largest opposition party, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Liberty Chiaka, at a press conference in Luanda.

"The fact that the deputies of the MPLA Parliamentary Group preferred to be accomplices in the crimes committed by the President, also violating the oath they took to defend the Constitution, does not mean that the impeachment process has ended (...) Its beginning was just sabotaged and postponed", highlighted the deputy.

On October 14, deputies from the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), who hold the parliamentary majority, stopped the impeachment process presented by UNITA, rejecting the creation of a possible commission, in a tumultuous plenary session that took place behind closed doors.

"They cannot, under the terms of the Constitution, state that there is no matter to remove the President, without first analyzing the process where this matter is exhaustively presented and proven", said the opposition parliamentary leader this Wednesday.

Liberty Chiaka also took stock of "the main contributions of the UNITA parliamentary group to the consolidation of the democratic rule of law", pointing out alleged summary executions of citizens, denial of justice, kidnapping, robbery and acts of corruption, committed by agents of the State.

"The evidence of acts of active and passive corruption among political office holders dependent on the President of the Republic has also increased", said Liberty Chiaka, mentioning, in particular, the case of the president of the Supreme Court, judge Joel Leonardo.

UNITA also identified and reported more than 170 violations of the Public Procurement Law, as well as "a frightening increase" in violations of budget execution rules.

According to Liberty Chiaka, of the 204 existing budgetary units, 141 were not accountable, and without political, financial, civil, criminal or disciplinary accountability.

"The Angolan nation massively rejected the governance of the President of the Republic, a fact that is reflected in the highest disapproval ever seen in times of peace", concluded the politician, highlighting that "the general feeling of citizens is that the President of the Republic in office has betrayed the oath he took, has absolutely lost the confidence of voters and, therefore, must be removed from office".
