Crew arrested and search expanded for shipwreck victims

The Angolan Civil Protection and Fire Service (SPCB) announced the arrest of a crew member of the vessel that sank on Saturday, in Luanda, causing six deaths and expanded the search, admitting that more bodies are adrift.

According to SPCB spokesperson Wilson Baptista, cited by Rádio Nacional de Angola, the crew member of the fishing boat, who was allegedly in a state of intoxication, has already been arrested and search operations continue this Monday.

The Luanda Provincial Command of the SPCB has expanded the search perimeter, “there is still a probability that there will be some bodies that are adrift, the searches will continue taking into account that the number of people who were on board is not properly clarified”, he noted .

At least six people died following this sinking that occurred on Saturday during a maritime procession on the Island of Luanda, an accident that involved a fishing boat.

The accident occurred on the coast, in an area with many waves, and the vessel, which joined the maritime procession of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, patron saint of sailors, was dragged to the bay area, a few miles from the coast of Luanda.

Four survivors of this accident, namely three adults and one child, are admitted to the ICU of a hospital unit, with the youngest “recovering satisfactorily”, according to hospital sources.

President João Lourenço lamented what happened, through his Facebook page, and highlighted that the authorities “are and will continue to be involved, with maximum commitment, in the rescue work and relief from the damage resulting from this incident at sea”.
