Ten years later, the statue of Queen Njinga returns to Largo do Kinaxixi

The statue of Queen Njinga Mbande returned, this Wednesday, to Largo do Kinaxixi. The statue's replacement took place ten years after its removal to requalify that area, in a project carried out by the government of the province of Luanda (GPL).

The provincial director of Infrastructures of the GPL, Calunga Quissanga, said that the occasion is a "milestone" and that the Kinaxixi Square is an "icon" of the city.

"It is indeed a landmark, the Kinaxixi square is an icon of our city and this proves that the planned stages of the renovation are being fully completed", he said, quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

"This was one of the phases that was part of this renovation program", he added, hoping that the square will be opened on the scheduled date.

"We are currently in the finishing stages, we are already working on the details. Fortunately, all the work is going perfectly. In the next few days, for example, we will be testing the traffic lights in that area (...) and the public lighting around the square will also be on for another two or three days," said the official, quoted by RNA.

It should be remembered that the aforementioned monument to Queen Njinga Mbande was erected in 2002, under the guidance of José Eduardo dos Santos, former President of the Republic, as part of the 27th anniversary of national independence.

According to assurances given to the press by the provincial government, quoted by Jornal de Angola, the redevelopment of Largo do Kinaxixi will be completed next month.
