Pregnant women can now be vaccinated against covid-19

The vaccination of pregnant women against covid-19 started this Wednesday. According to the announcement made by the coordinator of the National Vaccination Program, Alda de Sousa, Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines will be administered.

"Only now we have evidence that certain vaccines can already be applied to pregnant women," began the coordinator, adding that the epidemiological situation in the country is deteriorating, thus justifying the start of the vaccination of pregnant women.

"The epidemiological situation in Angola also tends to deteriorate, which is why I confirm once again that we must also vaccinate pregnant women. What kind of vaccines? The vaccines available in Angola that can vaccinate pregnant women are the Pfizer vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine", she said, in statements to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

Alda de Sousa underlined that the vaccination does not include pregnant women under 18 years old, because they are not part of the "group elected for vaccination".

The vaccine, she said, can be taken since the beginning of pregnancy: "There is no contraindication regarding the gestation period. All pregnant women, at any time during gestation, that is, from the first trimester of gestation on, can be vaccinated", she told RNA.

However, he safeguarded that the situation changes for cases in which there are medical recommendations.

"The remaining cases in which the doctor advises, or by medical indication advises that it has to be in the second period of gestation, we follow the medical guidelines. Even in relation to the type of vaccines, if the doctor advises that it has to be Pfizer and not AstraZeneca, we are prepared to offer this type of vaccines to our pregnant women", she concluded.
