Covid-19: Africa registers 696 more deaths and 19,663 new cases in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded over 696 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing to 200,741 the total number of deaths caused by the pandemic on this continent, and another 19,663 new cases of infection, according to official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 7,946.662 and the number recovered is 7,177,892.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,767,826 cases and 104,715 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region, is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,829,435 cases and 83,899 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds southern Africa, reached 2,411,500 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 64,671 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 927,920 infections and 19,117 deaths, while the West Africa region registers 617,310 cases of infection and has surpassed 9,000 deaths, reaching a total of 9011 deaths.

Central Africa is the least affected by the pandemic with a cumulative total of 222,106 cases of infection and 3,227 deaths.

Tunisia is the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, with a total of 23,993 deaths and 678,363 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,811 deaths and 290,773 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second largest number of infections across the continent, 889,532, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, 13,224 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5471 deaths and 198,654 people infected, Kenya, with 4800 deaths associated with the disease and 241,134 infections, and Ethiopia, with 4804 fatalities and 317,572 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique is the most affected, accounting for 1885 deaths associated with the disease and 148,444 cases accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola with 1299 deaths and 49,114 people infected by the disease.

Cape Verde has 317 deaths and 36,086 infections, Equatorial Guinea has 129 deaths and 9939 cases, Guinea-Bissau has 5934 infected and 122 deaths, and São Tomé and Príncipe has 38 deaths and 2697 infections.
