The summit, which will bring together the 27 EU member states and the 55 countries that make up the AU, takes place in the year that marks 25 years of partnership between the two blocs and "at a crucial moment when Angola assumes the rotating presidency of the African Union", the note highlights.

The partnership between the African Union and the European Union was formally established in 2000, at the first Africa-EU Summit in Cairo.

The previous summits were held in Lisbon (2007), Tripoli (2010), Brussels (2014), Abidjan (2017) and again in Brussels (2022).

The objective of the Luanda summit is to strengthen cooperation "in key areas such as peace and security, economic integration, trade, multilateralism, ecological development, digitalization, migration, mobility and human development", the note details.

The summit will be co-chaired by the President of Angola, João Lourenço, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will also participate in the event.

The Luanda meeting "will build on the outcomes of the recent EU-AU ministerial meeting held in Brussels last May.

At that meeting, the ministers reaffirmed "their commitment to strengthening ties between the two continents - guided by shared values, mutual interests and a common vision for sustainable growth and stability".
