The Governor, who was speaking during the second extended review meeting of the Program for the Massification of Birth Registration and Attribution of Identity Cards, indicated that in addition to the nine million registrations, the Executive plans to assign about six million identity cards.

Previously it had been estimated that by 2022 12 million people would be registered and more than eight million identity cards attributed. However, the minister explained that a study carried out by the National Institute of Statistics contradicted the figures.

Cited by Angop, the holder of the Justice and Human Rights portfolio said it was necessary to strengthen the awareness and mobilization of citizens as well as equip the brigades with the necessary means to achieve the desired values.

Among the various benefits of the massification of the register is the ease citizens will have to access the banks, he said.

In his speech, Francisco Queiroz also highlighted the registration of five Angolans over 100 years old. According to the minister, these citizens, from Bengo and Benguela provinces, were registered for the first time under the government's program.

Since the program was launched in November last year, 810,566 birth registrations have been made and more than 489,000 identity cards have been issued by July 28 this year.

The program is composed of 203 brigades and 1020 data collection stations and employs about 1200 people.
