CASA-CE headquarters vandalized. Party president says delegates “are out of control”

The president of the CASA-CE coalition asked for government intervention to help solve the problem of list delegates, who demand payment for services rendered in the elections, and this Wednesday they vandalized the party's headquarters, in Luanda.

Speaking to Lusa, Manuel Fernandes said that there is a "wave of revolt", partly instigated by opportunism, which has taken hundreds of list delegates, who followed the votes in last week's general elections, to the headquarters of the parties demanding subsidies.

"The situation is out of our control", lamented the president of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola - Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), stressing that he never gave guidelines in the sense of making any payment to the list delegates who must supervise the electoral act "for reasons of patriotism and political militancy, and not in exchange for any compensation".

He admitted, however, that although these were not the instructions of the party leadership "there may have been some mistakes" and that another message was transmitted.

According to Manuel Fernandes, in previous elections, parties received an exclusive subsidy for list delegates, which did not happen this year.

The problem has also affected other small parties that ran in the general elections and that have been the target of the fury of their list delegates, who complain of having been deceived, as Lusa previously reported.

"We ask those who are entitled to look at this situation and try to find a solution to calm the mood and prevent something less good from happening and that we stop giving the police work", he appealed.

Last week, the police had already been called to defend the headquarters of the National Patriotic Alliance (APN), National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), Social Renewal Party (PRS) and Humanist Party of Angola (PHA), parties of the opposition with whom CASA-CE's management is negotiating positions to try to solve the problem.

This morning, the CASA-CE headquarters in Maianga was the scene of scenes of violence, with several young people throwing objects and trying to force their way into the building.

Manuel Fernandes explained that the damage happened only in the outside area since the protesting youths were unable to access the interior of the house, regretting that there is some "use in the sense of denigrating the party" and obtaining financial gains, including by those who did not have any active participation in the monitoring of votes.

CASA-CE registered more than 33,000 delegates for the general elections, of which around 13,000 were in Luanda.

Questioning about the challenges they will present in view of the final results of the elections, according to which CASA-CE no longer has parliamentary representation, losing the 16 deputies it had, he revealed that the technical team is still working on this matter.

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced on Monday that the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won the elections in Angola with 51.17 percent of the votes against 43.95 percent for the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

The MPLA won 3,209,429 votes, electing 124 deputies, and UNITA won 2,756,786 votes, guaranteeing 90 deputies.

The PRS was the third most voted party with 1.14 percent of the total, electing two deputies, followed by the FNLA, also with two parliamentary seats and 1.06 percent of the vote.

The PHA will be the new political formation of parliament, debuting with two MPs after winning a vote of 1.02 percent.

CASA-CE, which had 16 parliamentarians, lost all its seats, reaching no more than 0.76 percent of the votes.

The APN and the Nationalist Justice Party (P-Njango) are the other two competing parties that did not win seats and were below 0.50 percent, and should be declared extinct.

The CNE plenary thus proclaimed the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, head of the MPLA list, the most voted party, and vice-president, Esperança da Costa, second on the MPLA list.
