Week begins with 1199 cases of covid-19 in Angola

Angola has recorded 35 more covid-19 infections and one death in the last 24 hours, and has registered the recovery of a person previously infected, the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, said.

The new cases relate to people aged between 6 and 83 years, 20 male and 15 female.

Of the 35 cases, one is from Dande, Bengo province, and was imported from Luanda, while the rest are from Luanda province.

As for the death, a 35-year-old Angolan with comorbidities, was admitted to the field hospital of the Special Economic Zone and had complications related to pneumonia, he said.

Angola has a total of 1199 cases, plus 35 relative to Saturday, of which 55 deaths, 461 recovered and 684 active, 18 of them in serious condition and 12 critical.

Covid-19 already affects 11 of the country's 18 provinces, Luanda being the epicenter of the disease.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 685,000 lives and infected more than 17.8 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

In Africa, there are 19,920 confirmed deaths in more than 944,000 people infected in 55 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics from that continent.
