MPLA and UNITA mourn Carlos Burity's death

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) parties mourned the death of artist Carlos Burity, who died this Wednesday in Luanda, victim of illness.

In a statement by the MPLA, the party indicated that it had received the news of Burity's death "with an unmistakable feeling of sadness", having underlined the "legacy left" and the "contribution made to the history of Angolan popular music".

In the note, the MPLA addressed the "most bereaved family and the entire Angolan artistic class with the most heartfelt condolences".

The president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, also said that he had received the news of the musician's death “with deep sadness”.

“With his very popular artistic creations and participation in different musical groups, Carlos Burity raised our semba [genre of traditional Angonal music and dance], marked the Angolan culture”, highlighted the president of UNITA in a statement released by his office .

Adalberto Costa Júnior pointed out that Burity “leaves a vast and valuable musical legacy that must be preserved by the competent authorities of the country”, while also sending “the deepest feelings of regret to the bereaved family, the class of musicians and the cultural heritage institutions” of Angola.

Carlos Burity died, at the age of 67, from a prolonged illness. The musician had already been hospitalized for a month and was recovering at home, but he started to feel “tired and dejected” and had to return to Clínica Girassol, in Luanda, where he ended up dying, according to the friend and promoter musician, Maló Jaime, speaking to Lusa.
