"The appointment of Ambassador Ivo Jorge Valente represents a new chapter in our diplomatic relations with Angola. His extensive experience in the areas of law and governance, combined with a deep understanding of our country's development needs, will be crucial in strengthening our strong partnership" with Angola, said Ramos-Horta, quoted in a press release.
According to the Timorese President, the appointment of the new ambassador reaffirms Timor-Leste's commitment to "strengthening ties within the CPLP [Community of Portuguese Language Countries] family" and to using the "shared history of the struggle for independence as the foundation for a prosperous future for both peoples."
Ambassador Ivo Jorge Valente served as Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2017 and Deputy Minister of Justice from 2010 to 2015. He has a background in law, public administration, and international relations.
Timor-Leste and Angola have signed several cooperation agreements, the most recent of which, in the areas of military assistance and oil, were signed in 2023, during an official visit by the Timorese head of state to Luanda.
Timor-Leste opened an embassy in Luanda in July 2024, and Angola inaugurated its embassy in Dili last May.
Ivo Jorge Valente replaces Ambassador Francisco Miranda Branco.
