Sinédoque show arrives in Luanda to celebrate the Portuguese language

Actor Ivo Canelas and pianist João Vasco will present the show Sinédoque in Luanda on Thursday, a concert that celebrates World Portuguese Language Day by revisiting contemporary poets with unpublished works for piano.

This traveling show premiered in 2023 and was presented in Tunis (Tunisia), Mindelo, Praia, Paris, Elvas and, in March 2024, in Brasília, São Paulo and Foz do Iguaçu, now arriving in Angola, to celebrate the Portuguese language at Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda.

The concert created with unpublished works for piano and reciter is performed by the actor Ivo Canelas, who interprets the poems, and João Vasco on the piano.

“Evoking the figure of style through which “the part for the whole” or “the whole for the part” is expressed, the show “Sinédoque” revisits and reinvents the work of Portuguese poets from the 20th and 21st centuries, including Alexandre O’Neill, Ruy Belo and Margarida Vale de Gato”, according to a press release from Camões.

Ivo Canelas, one of the most prominent actors in Portuguese cinema and theater, has a degree in Theater Studies from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute, in New York, as a Calouste Gulbenkian scholarship holder.

João Vasco is a piano teacher at the National Conservatory's School of Music, dividing his time between stage, composition, teaching, photography and video.

He holds a degree from the National Conservatory of Lisbon, a degree from the Lisbon School of Music and a Master's in Musical Arts from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
