Nearly 700 Congolese expelled from Angola arrived in DRCongo last week

Almost 700 Congolese from Angola arrived in the province of Kasai, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) last week, local press reports this Tuesday citing a local border control representative.

The data were announced by a local representative of the National Border Hygiene Program, Christian Mabedi, quoted by the United Nations Radio Okapi portal.

According to him, the unofficial entry of these Congolese is not facilitating health control, especially given the presence of covid-19 cases in both countries.

"Sometimes people don't go through temperature control. For example, people who come out of the bush, where we have not put agents. It's difficult to get these people to go through the checkpoints for temperature measurement," said Mabedi.

Mabedi said it is possible to find these people who escape border controls in nearby towns.

"For example, in Kabunga on 2 May we got 52 people, but they didn't go through the temperature measurement," he said.

According to the authorities of Kasai province, they are Congolese who have been deported from Angola, where they were in an irregular situation.

Last week, the Congolese press reported the arrival of 250 citizens between Monday and Wednesday.

The week before, the provincial government of Kasai regretted, during the Council of Ministers, the expulsion of Congolese from Angola and the incursion of the Angolan armed forces into Congolese territory.

Until March, about 20 thousand refugees were placed at the border by the Angolan authorities, with the agreement of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The refugees have repeatedly complained of abuses by the Angolan authorities, who have denied the accusation, and claim that they are forced to walk for days, sleeping by the side of the road and carrying all their belongings.

For Luanda, Congolese who have not registered with the immigration service are considered illegal immigrants because the civil war in the neighbouring country is over and they have lost their refugee status.

Since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, the African continent has counted more than 47,000 cases, exceeding 1,800 deaths.

According to the African Union, the DRC has registered 705 cases, including 34 deaths, while Angola has announced 35 cases, of which two have died.
