Multicaixa network expects to increase transactions by 20 percent this year

The Multicaixa network processes 120 million financial operations monthly, amounting to 1.9 billion kwanzas, and is expected to increase transactions by 20 percent this year, the Interbank Services Company (Emis) announced this Tuesday.

The executive director of Emis, Joaquim Caniço, who was speaking at a press conference celebrating the company's 21st anniversary, recalled that it was created in 2002, when Angola was "coming out of a period of armed conflict", in an environment characterized by a low people's integration rate in the banking system, the existence of few banks and citizens' distrust in the use of banking services.

In the current year, informed the executive director of Emis, Duano Silva, more than 300 million transactions have already been processed in the first quarter, noting that so far the increase has been around 29 percent.

"There are months that are better, others less good, and we hope that by December of this year, compared to December 2022, the growth will be 20 percent. We process around 1.9 billion kwanzas per month, resulting from more than 120 million transactions", he said.

The monthly total of financial operations was registered at a set of 3,100 ATMs, 30 percent of which in the province of Luanda, the country's capital, around 150,000 Automatic Payment Terminals (TPA) and over 750,000 users of the Multicaixa Express application.

Joaquim Caniço stressed that the Multicaixa network "is one of the greatest contributions of technological innovation in recent years", adding more and more services, the most recent being a new feature that allows the user of the Multicaixa Express application to activate payment cards without having to move to an automatic teller machine.

"The Multicaixa network will continue to contribute to the massification of electronic payments towards the total digitization of payments in Angola, with security, convenience and confidence in its use", said the official.

Regarding the issue of security, Duano Silva said that Emis, in order to help users of its services, invested, at the end of last year, in the program called "Digital Citizen", which "has the challenge of educating two generations of Angolans".

"It is a program that was set up to, from the age of 14, start educating people about good practice and the use of digital media. The program is ongoing, with training at all levels at no cost" , he stressed.

Another investment in terms of security, continued the official, was the hiring of a company, in 2022, for the cybersurveillance of fake profiles.

"To give you an idea, since November last year, this company has managed to eliminate more than a thousand fake profiles on the internet. As profiles are created with well-defined keywords, these profiles are automatically pursued and killed", he underlined.

Asked about the registered frauds, the person in charge also advanced that security has been reinforced and improvements made to the application, with messages about the good use of this tool, as an example, to avoid sharing codes.

Joaquim Caniço informed that robberies and thefts, resulting from cases in which the cards are exposed with the code, lead the list of frauds, with the registration, in 2022, of 2,770 cases, totaling 877 million kwanzas.

In the last six months, in the Multicaixa Express service, 122 cases were detected, according to the executive director of Emis (in October, 55 cases were registered, in November 20, in December 19, in January 15, in February six and in March seven).

"We understand that the whole range of measures that have been taken are having an effect", said Joaquim Caniço, adding that the more security measures are adopted, the greater the decrease in the various types of fraud.
