Government confirms 102 detainees so far in taxi driver strike incidents

The Minister of the Interior informed, in Luanda, that so far 102 people are detained suspected of the practice of acts of rioting and vandalism registered in the wake of the taxi drivers' strike in the capital.

Eugénio Laborinho, who was speaking during a special information program carried out by the Public Television of Angola about the incidents that occurred last Monday, in Benfica, during a taxi drivers' strike in Luanda, in which acts of violence with the destruction of public and private goods, as well as attacks on citizens.

The official said that the processes are being instructed, so that they are held responsible for the attempted murder, coercion, public instigation of crime and rebellion, attack against transport security, damage with violence, offense to physical integrity, theft, criminal association, disobedience, among others.

"Of the 102 suspects detained, of which 96 for riot, five for damages with violence and qualified theft, 79 detentions have already been formalized following the various forms of process, with 41 summary proceedings, 14 common processes and 24 awaiting the order of the Public Ministry. ", informed the minister.

Eugénio Laborinho also pointed out that of the 41 detainees, whose cases were referred to the Luanda and Viana district courts for summary judgment, eight were convicted, with sentences of three months in prison, 19 were acquitted due to insufficient evidence, 11 were detained. whose cases were processed in the usual way, being in the preparatory stage of investigation, given that some crimes committed by those citizens cannot be judged in summary proceedings, as they have a penal framework of more than three years", he stressed.

The interior minister admitted that the number of detainees could increase, "since the investigations are following their normal course, so that all those who are identified as moral perpetrators, such as the instigators, those who incited the practices of disturbances, rebellion, vandalism and riot are also targets of criminal proceedings against them".

"We are not going to stop here, we are going to continue", warned the minister, stressing that "the State cannot remain undaunted and serene, observing acts that violate public order and tranquility, so the bodies that compete for the administration of justice continue to work so that the perpetrators repair the damage caused and respond judicially and criminally for their actions", he stressed.

According to Eugénio Laborinho, the democratic rule of law cannot be confused as well as the right to strike, "with vandalism, rioting, violence and other criminal actions".

The minister said that as a precautionary measure, policing was reinforced throughout the province of Luanda, in particular, and throughout the country in general, at taxi stops, "because there may be a tendency for some to prevent taxi drivers who want to work normally in being able to carry out their activity".

"We have also 'relocated' our forces, there was a reinforcement of policing in several arteries of the city, we are in dialogue with various social actors, we are striving for proactive and proximity policing", he reinforced.

The minister said that the Government is aware of the existence of certain duly identified groups, "whose motivations are subversion of the established power, through violence, they want to sow panic in society, taking advantage of the protest and the complaint of some social issues. to create instability in the country".

The governor appealed to all citizens "not to adhere to such unconfessed intentions, but to embark on dialogue".
