BNA Governor: “Angola had the courage to embrace a reform program”

The central bank governor highlighted Angola's anticipation of its economic reform program, following recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), despite the covid-19 pandemic.

:

José de Lima Massano said he participated this week as a speaker at a forum organized by the IMF, which brought together senior officials from some African countries and the Middle East, and at that high-level conference it was clear that what Angola is doing "is what many are going to have to do in the next few years ".

The governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA) said that "Angola had the courage to embrace a reform program, which even in this scenario of covid-19, has allowed the economy to march".

"At that meeting, it was said that, on average, our countries will take between four to five years to restore what they had before the covid-19. It is demanding", considered José de Lima Massano, rejoicing that Angola has "a positive note".

"We started these reforms earlier, [because] we were already having problems back there and what we did with corrections, and what continues, is what is being recommended to many African and Middle Eastern countries, there we also have a positive note" , he stressed.

Angola has been implementing a macroeconomic stabilization program since 2018, which provides for fiscal consolidation, greater exchange rate flexibility, and reducing the public debt / gross domestic product ratio to 60 percent in the medium term.

Improving the debt profile through a liability management operation, settling overdue internal payments and effectively implementing anti-money laundering legislation is also part of the program's objectives.
