Angolan Licínio Januário launches streaming platform dedicated to black culture

The Angolan Licínio Januário launched, in Brazil, the first streaming platform with content dedicated to the black community. Based on urban culture and regional diversity, the initiative intends to produce positive narratives that represent the black population in that country.

Designated Wolo TV, the platform debuted on December 25, 2020, with the launch of the comedy series "Casa da Vó".

Founded by the Angolan Licínio Januário - actor and director living for over 10 years in Brazil - together with Leandro Lemos, who has over 20 years of experience in technology in Brazil and the United States, aims to represent the more than 110 million black people in the country.

According to Licínio Januário, the main objective of the platform is to "promote the intellectual and economic empowerment" of the black population living in Brazil.

"In Brazil, a young black man is killed by police every 23 minutes. This is real. The world doesn't know that. To change that reality, we need to change politics and the media. We are working with Wolo TV to use technology and the media to change how Black people are represented here," he said, quoted by the Bantumen website.

For now, the platform will be available in Brazil, but the founders intend to expand the project across borders: "We intend to expand to other countries, such as Angola and Portugal, for example, because our goal is to decentralize the market in order to expand it," he said in an interview with Mutamba Audiovisual magazine, quoted by Platinaline.

"Casa da Vó" is the first great premiere of the platform. This Brazilian sitcom, another project by Angolan Licínio Januário - written by himself in partnership with Allex Miranda, Erica Ribeiro and Milena Anjos - intends to represent black actors and actresses on television. The series tells the story of a successful former public servant who lives in the Jabaquara neighborhood with her four grandchildren.

The protagonist is actress Margareth Menezes. Casa da Vó" also features the participation of rapper and music producer Rincon Sapiência, actor Wilson Rabelo, actress and influence Baiana Jacy Lima and the digital influencer Dum Ice.

It consists of five episodes of 30 minutes each. The first episode is free and the rest can only be seen for a fee.
