João Lourenço was speaking at the opening of the MPLA Central Committee meeting taking place this Monday, highlighting among the documents to be discussed, for submission to the VIII extraordinary congress next month, the adjustments to the party's statutes.
According to João Lourenço, in the history of the MPLA, in addition to the various ordinary congresses held every five years, seven extraordinary congresses have been held to date, of which five adjustments were made to the party's statutes, the last in June 2019.
"Next December's congress will be the sixth time that the party will make adjustments to its statutes in an extraordinary congress", said João Lourenço, highlighting that at the next meeting he will make "deeper considerations about the current moment in the life of the party and the Angolan nation, on the eve of celebrating 50 years of its national independence".
The holding of this VIII extraordinary congress was announced in October this year, with the motto being the 50 years of independence that Angola celebrates in 2025 and, subsequently, an adjustment to the party's statutes was announced, raising speculation regarding this agreement, which was supposedly aimed at to allow João Lourenço a new mandate.
Recently, at the meeting of the MPLA Honor Council, João Lourenço spoke about this topic, clarifying that adjustments to the party's statutes are possible at extraordinary congresses.
"Much is said and speculated about the purposes and ends of holding this extraordinary congress, as if our statutes did not admit this possibility, whenever necessary, when in reality it is not the first in the history of our party, but the VIII extraordinary", said João Lourenço last October.
The MPLA statutes and the Constitution of the Republic limit up to two terms, both the leadership of the party and the President of the Republic, preventing João Lourenço from running again for these two positions after 2027.
