Angola launches second edition of the National Human Rights Award

The Government launched this Monday the second edition of the National Human Rights Award, for the nomination of four categories, whose registration runs until January 31, the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights reported this Monday.

:

According to the Secretary of State for Human Rights, Ana Celeste Januário, in April next year, the winners of the awards will be announced in the categories personality of the year, research in human rights, community and humanitarian actions, and culture of peace and citizenship.

The official said that the value of the prizes is more symbolic than material "because it is a prize in terms of human rights".

"This is how the nominees will be entitled to a trophy, a statuette, as a symbol of the award, a pecuniary bonus, an award certificate for each category, signed by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights", informed the Secretary of State, underlining that the value can vary between 300 thousand kwanzas and one million kwanzas.

The official stressed that there are limitations to the candidacy of public entities, "because the idea of the award is above all to reward civil society actions", another limitation being the temporal relevance of the themes to be presented.

"For example, if a citizen has a search made in 2010 and that no longer has relevance in 2022 or 2023, the jury would probably not consider it or would be in a low evaluation, given that we are in 2022 and there must be some relevance to the moment", explained Ana Celeste Januário.

For applications, the e-mail address premios@minjudh.gov.ao is available for any citizen who wants to "apply for you personally or any institution, legal person, association or individual you know, who deserves merit".

For regions where it is not possible to submit the application by e-mail, the act can be carried out through the headquarters of the local human rights committees, with the announcement of the winners scheduled for April next year.

In the first edition, created in 2020 by presidential decree, Maria Teresa Manuela, African Commissioner for Human and Peoples' Rights, won the personality of the year category for her work on human rights in Angola and across borders.

In the categories of research and culture of peace and citizenship, the two awards were won by the Center for Human Rights and Citizenship of the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Angola, for the work in scientific matters and the promotion of peace, which they developed over the course of period.

The category of community and humanitarian actions was won by the Association for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA), with a project developed in southern Angola.

The jury is made up of partner institutions that are not necessarily linked to State institutions, said the official, namely the Union of Journalists of Angola, the Council of Christian Churches of Angola or the National Union of Higher Education Teachers.
