Seven fishermen rescued on the high seas after four days adrift

Seven Angolan fishermen were rescued this Thursday, after four days adrift, due to a malfunction in the vessel's engine at sea in Bengo province, the National Police told Lusa.

According to the spokesman for the National Police, Deputy Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues, the fishermen were rescued at around 10:00 am local time, off the coast of Luanda, and are receiving medical care at the Health Post of the Maritime Fiscal Customs Police, due to their weakened state of health.

Mateus Rodrigues also informed that the fishermen had an engine malfunction and ran out of fuel, water and food.

The police spokesperson stressed that the rescue took a long time because the sailors "could not give an exact location, as they did not have the appropriate means of location".

The operation involved the Navy and Air Force, the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), the Tax Police, the Integrated Center for Public Security, the Criminal Investigation Service and the Captaincy of the Port of Luanda.

On Tuesday, the fishermen were able to communicate with the rescue team via a mobile phone, which made it easier to locate the vessel.
