António Venâncio asks for extension of the deadline for candidacy to the MPLA leadership

António Venâncio, pre-candidate for the MPLA leadership, asked for an extension of the deadline for submitting candidacies to the MPLA leadership, which is scheduled to end this Friday, November 5th. In addition, the pre-candidate claims to have sent a letter to the MPLA challenging the way in which the process is being developed, raising questions about its transparency.

According to DW, in his letter Venâncio argues that there were several obstacles in several provinces, especially in the east and south of the country.

António Venâncio also mentions the situation of the militants who were allegedly compelled not to sign a candidacy that did not have the support of the MPLA leadership.

"We asked for an extension because of several situations that happened. Therefore, there is a less pleasant inventory here, of some cases, which greatly affected the performance of our teams in the field", he said, in an interview with DW.

He further revealed to DW that during the two weeks, the allotted time for submitting nominations, he was faced with several violations of his statutory rights.

"Unfortunately, based on these expressions that emerged, some hesitation by the militants, the misinformation itself, the silence of the State media, some statements around the congress and candidates, with statements that created more confusion among the militants, everything this contributed to the less good performance of our teams," he said.

Each candidate must submit a candidacy with at least 2000 signatures (100 militants in each of the 18 provinces). Venâncio claims to have obtained more than the minimum amount of subscriptions and says that the greatest difficulty is in around four provinces, where the number of subscriptions is below the minimum requested.

"There are provinces where we have performed well. Others not so much. Of the 18 provinces, there are provinces that have greatly exceeded the number and therefore not all provinces have reached the number that was necessary to reach," he explained.
