Candidacies for the UNITA leadership started without any proposal from militants

The process of submitting candidacies for the leadership of UNITA, the biggest opposition party, which elects a new president in December, started this Thursday without any proposal from militants, announced the spokesman of the XIII Congress.

:

"Today we don't receive any candidacy, but we hope there will be. Due to the way this congress was imposed, we expect to receive few (candidacies), at most two and at least one, but we are not going to prevent people from applying and we are open," stated Anastácio Rubém Sicato in statements to Lusa.

The process of submitting candidacies for the leadership of UNITA, with a view to electing a new president, after the removal of Adalberto Costa Júnior, runs until 11 November.

A ruling by the Constitutional Court recently annulled the XIII UNITA Congress, held in 2019, and the consequent deliberations that elected Adalberto Costa Júnior to the leadership.

Isaias Samakuva, by virtue of the ruling, returned to the leadership of UNITA and will preside over the political organization until the election of a new president at the congress convened for between 2 and 4 December.

The conclave should gather, in Luanda, 1150 delegates who will be elected by base militants in the preparatory conferences.

In light of the 2015 statutes, taken as the basis for this congress, the candidate for the leadership of UNITA must have original Angolan nationality, "a minimum of 15 years of consistent and irreproachable militancy, political and moral authority and mastery of the party's ideological political line".

Being members of the political commission, "having proven good political, moral and civic conduct, being accepted by the ranks of the party", and gathering at least 40 percent of the signatures of full members of the political commission are also other requirements imposed on candidates.

The candidate for the UNITA presidency must also gather at least 1000 signatures from party militants in full enjoyment of their rights, that is, 50 signatures for each of the 18 provinces.
