Engineer António Venâncio advances with candidacy for the leadership of MPLA

One of the most prominent national cadres in the construction sector, António Venâncio, this Wednesday, at the end of the day, formalized his candidacy for the leadership of the ruling party.

In a statement released on his social networks, the engineer 'speaks' to Angolans in the country and abroad, saying that he formalized, with the party's leadership, his intention to run for the position of MPLA president.

"I am available to provide all the collaboration to the party organs in the next few days, towards the conclusion of the candidacy process in good time", says António Venâncio. The now candidate for the party's leadership, also refers that "the strengthening of internal democracy will greatly enhance the Angolan democratic process, aiming at strengthening it, accelerating the actions of the country's development and making the Angolan man a reality".

Saying goodbye with a "Viva Angola", the engineer already has some supporters on social networks, and a 'task force' is being created for his electoral campaign.

“I've been at the MPLA for 48 years and I meet the requirements. I have a strategy and a vision for the country and I think it is time to make that vision reach the militants and the delegates (to the Congress)”, he told Lusa, stressing that “it is time to transform the MPLA into a more prestigious institution”.

António Venâncio wants a “new era” for the MPLA, with a democratized party that will also allow advancing towards a more democratic country. “The MPLA has everything to lead the country's democratization process by setting an example to the world”, he highlighted, adding that it is time for activists to assert their statutory rights.

António Venâncio is a native of Rangel, in Luanda. He holds a master's degree in Technical Sciences and a professor in Inspection and Monitoring of Public and Private Works. He graduated from Kharkiv, former Soviet Union, in 1988. Until January 2018 he was one of the top advisors to the Ministry of Construction.

He has in his curriculum more than 300 works throughout the national territory, having coordinated the works of the mausoleum at the Dr. Agostinho Neto Memorial. He defends the construction of social housing, but is critical of the centralities model.

António Venâncio thus presents himself as the first candidate to take on the MPLA leadership dispute with João Lourenço. The party's fate will be mapped out at the next congress, which takes place in December, at a time when the country is less than a year away from holding general elections.

Irene Neto, daughter of the first president of Angola, Agostinho Neto, also made known through a statement that she does not close the door on an invitation to present a strategy motion and a list to the MPLA leadership, although she is not, at the moment, a candidate.
