NKC Consultant: protests in Angola show "growing discontent" over governance

Consultant NKC African Economics said this Thursday that Wednesday's protests in Luanda show "growing discontent with the governance of João Lourenço" and were fuelled by levels of "massive unemployment" among youth.

"Dissatisfaction with the government of João Lourenço has been growing, with the economy being affected by low oil prices and the effects of covid-19," one reads in a commentary to the demonstrations and protests on Wednesday, the day marking 45 years of Angola's independence.

"The decision to postpone local elections has exacerbated discontent and has been fuelled to some extent by UNITA and criticism that the government is reneging on its commitment to reform the political system," he added in a note sent to customers this Thursday.

"Mass unemployment among young people was also an important factor behind the protests, with young activists leading the mobilization of the protests," the analysts wrote.

Angola marked on Wednesday 45 years of the country's independence, being a day of national holiday, in which it was planned to hold a demonstration, organized by a group of young activists, to demand better living conditions and a date for the first local elections.

The Government of the Province of Luanda prohibited the holding of this demonstration, evoking several reasons, one of which was the non-compliance with the presidential decree on the state of public calamity, which prevents gatherings of more than five people in the streets, as a measure to prevent and combat the spread of covid-19.

The police prevented the attempt to demonstrate, having used force and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, with reports of injuries and some arrests.
