João Lourenço, in a message of condolence sent to the family of Ismael Mateus, who died this Tuesday in a road accident in Luanda, said that it was with deep consternation that he received the news of the tragic accident that claimed the life of the active member of the Council of the Republic and a highly regarded journalist, radio broadcaster and writer.

He considered that Angola has lost an intellectual who, in his intervention in public life, "always knew how to combine a high critical sense with civic-mindedness and respect for democratic institutions".

This "responsible stance was an example for the younger generations, who saw in him a master and a role model", he stressed, emphasizing that the premature death of Ismael Mateus, who had a legion of followers and admirers, impoverishes journalism and Angolan culture.

The head of state expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving family, his friends and colleagues.

Journalist and advisor to the President of the Republic, Ismael Mateus, died this Tuesday at the age of 61, in Luanda, the victim of a traffic accident, announced the police.

The death of Ismael Mateus, also a writer, columnist and analyst of political and social issues, is causing pain and consternation in various segments of Angolan society, in light of public reactions in the media and on social networks.

According to a statement from the police, the journalist died this Tuesday, when the vehicle he was driving swerved and crashed into a fixed obstacle, on Avenida 21 de Janeiro, presumably due to excessive speed, and he died instantly at the scene.
