Sílvia Lutucuta dismisses clinical director of Lucrécia Paím Maternity

The clinical director of the Lucrécia Paím Maternity was dismissed by the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta. The dismissal comes after, last week, a “serious act of medical negligence” occurred in the aforementioned unit, following the rejection of a patient who arrived at the maternity ward from another hospital.

According to a statement, cited by Novo Jornal, the situation happened on October 18th, with the patient ending up receiving assistance at the Hospital Materno-Infantil Dr. Pedro Manuel Azancot de Menezes.

"The measure follows an act of serious medical negligence, which took place in that hospital unit, on the 18th of October, resulting in the rejection of a seriously ill patient who, fortunately, ended up being treated at the Hospital Materno-Infantil Dr. Pedro Manuel Azancot de Menezes", said the statement, cited by Novo Jornal.

Furthermore, the note adds, "a disciplinary process was also initiated against the members of the service team involved".

The Ministry of Health, in the press release, "reiterates zero tolerance in relation to acts of inhumane treatment of patients and other users of the services of health units and other institutions attached to it, as recently decreed on September 22, 2023" .

The guardianship also expresses determination "in implementing the necessary measures that guarantee dignified, competent, ethical and humanized treatment to the population", reads the statement, cited by Novo Jornal.

It should be noted that the head of Health carried out a visit to the patient in question, having stated at the time that they are going to work and that they cannot "be making mistakes". "We are all going to work for improvement, this is the State's commitment, it is the Government's commitment, and we also have the responsibility to train the staff and we are training. But it is a process", she stated.

According to Novo Jornal, the patient - in need of surgery - was rejected by a doctor on duty after arriving at the hospital in question from another reference hospital in the capital.

After the visit, Sílvia Lutucuta held a meeting with the general and clinical directors of the capital's large public hospital units, expressing concern and disappointment with this type of situation.

Last month, health authorities' alarms were raised after a young man died outside the Américo Boavida Hospital.
