UNITA “outraged” by death on admission to hospital calls for resignation of Minister of Health

This Wednesday, UNITA called for the resignation of the Minister of Health and the director of Hospital Américo Boavida (HAB), expressing “disgust” at the death of a citizen, at the door of that hospital unit in Luanda, due to “medical negligence”.

The parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) says that it was with “enormous disgust, indignation and concern” that it learned of the death, on Tuesday, of a 25-year-old young man, at the door of the HAB, “for being denied entry and medical and medication assistance”.

In a note, the UNITA parliamentary group states that repeated incidents like this happen in hospital units, because the National Health Service presents “serious structural weaknesses and, above all, does not put the life of the human person at the center of attention”.

“Strangely, this incident takes place at a time when the Angolan executive is proclaiming improvements in the health sector, when after all, some reference units only treat patients with specific cases”, says the party.

The political party considers it “unacceptable” that more deaths due to medical negligence continue to occur and recalls that the objective of a “self-respecting” hospital is to provide first aid and provide healthcare.

It also recalls that the Constitution establishes respect and protection for human life, “which is inviolable”, and “invites”, therefore, the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, and the general director of HAB to “assume attitudes of moral elevation and ethics” and make their places available.

The HAB management announced the suspension of the medical team, following this incident, and reported the incident, due to alleged negligence of the medical team on duty, to the Criminal Investigation Service.

Images circulating on social media show the corpse of a young man on the ground outside the HAB, located in the Urban District of Rangel.

According to UNITA, which urges the Attorney General's Office to identify the perpetrators of yet another criminal action for consequent accountability, the defense of life and the duty to serve cannot be reconciled with mere speeches and public apologies.

“The repeated occurrence of these situations that diminish us as a people and nation with a vocation for solidarity is unacceptable, unjustifiable and inexplicable”, UNITA further noted.

Cases of medical negligence, many of which result in deaths in public hospitals, have been reported by several citizens.
