João Lourenço, who spoke this Monday at the opening of the parliamentary year, stressed that the fight against corruption and the asset recovery process remain at the top of the State's agenda and threw out numbers to prove this priority.
According to the chief executive, in 2023 ten properties valued at around 1,700 million dollars (1,600 million euros) were recovered, shareholdings valued at 800 million dollars (760 million euros) and financial resources amounting to more than 133 million dollars (126 million euros).
Also this year, properties, shareholdings and monetary values worth one billion dollars (around 950 million euros) were seized and/or arrested, in Angola or abroad, said the head of state, promising, soon, "more news".
Still on the topic of justice, João Lourenço said that the Attorney General's Office currently has 635 magistrates, still insufficient for the multiple existing tasks, with around 170 thousand criminal cases being processed in this body in preparatory investigation, of which more than 115 thousand have already been completed.
There are still 267 cases initiated, 122 investigations carried out to investigate signs of the practice of economic and financial crimes, 109 cases were filed in courts of common jurisdiction, of which 51 in the Supreme Court, he said.
The fight against corruption has been presented as a banner for João Lourenço since he took office as President of the Republic, succeeding José Eduardo dos Santos, who led the country for 38 years.
João Lourenço, who began his second term in 2022, guaranteed that the rich and powerful would not escape the justice system and declared the end of impunity, with several legal cases having emerged in recent years, many of which targeted family members of the former President or your close collaborators.
