In a note sent to the Lusa agency by the Representation of the Republic of Angola at the United Nations, it is indicated that Ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira expressed this support during an intervention at the Special Committee on Policy and Decolonization of the United Nations.
According to the document, dated this Friday, the diplomat referred specifically to the issue of Western Sahara, which "continues to deserve" Angola's attention, as it is, she said, the last Non-Autonomous Territory in Africa.
Thus, Luanda says that it supports a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict and mentions the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's special envoy for Western Sahara, reiterating its support in the "resumption of negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front", according to General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.
In this way, the Angolan ambassador to the UN reiterated the appeal to the Security Council to respect the commitment reaffirmed in resolution 2602 of October 2021", to resume the political process, to help the parties reach a mutually acceptable peaceful solution that provides for the self-determination of the Western Sahara.
The diplomat also asks the "international community" to honor all the principles assumed in the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, in accordance with Resolution 1514, on self-determination and in all relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Council of Security about decolonization.
According to the same document, the ambassador reaffirmed Angola's support for the Special Committee's efforts to implement the full decolonization of all Non-Autonomous Territories, having encouraged "visit missions" to these territories for a realistic assessment of the situation on the ground.
