Provincial government announces construction of new general hospital in Cunene

The city of Ondjiva, in Cunene province, will have a new general hospital. The announcement of the construction of the hospital unit was made this Thursday by Gerdina Didalelwa, governor of that province, and comes weeks after a large fire destroyed a significant part of the general hospital in Cunene.

The new hospital will be built on the site where the Agriculture and Livestock Fair is usually held in that province. The chosen site already has access to water and electricity from the public network and is easily accessible to National Road 105, says Angop.

Without going into further details, the governor said that the new unit will also have new medical specialties, however, she did not specify which ones.

Before the fire the hospital was composed of a pediatrics, maternity ward, operating room, emergency room, microbiology laboratory, pharmacy, patient inpatient area and computerized axial tomography (CT) room.

After the fire, which broke out on the 5th of this month, the Ondjiva General Hospital decided to transfer its surgical services to Chiulo Catholic Mission Hospital. That hospital unit, the largest in Cunene, was also forced to transfer about 200 patients to the nearest health centers and hospitals.

That hospital was founded in 1934 and had capacity for 250 beds. In 2014 it was the target of expansion and rehabilitation works.
