The fire in the main sanitary unit of this southern province, located in the capital, Ondjiva, started around 9:40 pm and was only extinguished at 2 am, leaving vital areas of the hospital totally burned, namely the operating room, the surgery area and the inpatient wards.
The patients were removed and transferred to hospital units around Ondjiva.
According to Valter Nandi, head of information and analysis of Cunene's protection and fire departments, one of the people who was hospitalized died when she was transported to another hospital, admitting that smoke inhalation may have contributed to the deadly outcome.
Hospital services are trying to locate a newborn baby, who was in an incubator and is reported missing, indicated the same source.
The causes of the fire, which caused extensive material damage, have yet to be determined.
