Covid-19: Africa records 229 deaths and 7263 more cases of infection in 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 229 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of deaths to 36,372, for a total of 1,488,488 infected, according to the latest pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there were in the 55 member states of the organization more 7263 cases of the disease and 6251 recovered, for a total of 1,230,648.

According to Africa CDC, Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases of infection and deaths, having exceeded 18,000 deaths in the last 24 hours, to 18,134 fatalities, and the total number of infected is now 740,201.

In South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, 676,084 cases and 16,866 cases are reported.

Northern Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 341,362 people infected and 11,191 killed and, in West Africa, the number of infections is 177,318, with 2624 fatalities.

The East Africa region now accounts for 171,661 cases and records 3342 fatalities and in Central Africa there are 57,946 cases and 1081 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 5946 dead and 103,317 infected, and Morocco counts 2229 dead and 126,044 cases.

Algeria followed, with 51,533 cases of infection registered and 2037 fatalities.

Among the six countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 76,098 cases and 1205 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 59,001 infected and 1,112 dead.

In relation to African countries whose official language is Portuguese, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.

Angola records 185 deaths and 5114 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5045 cases, numbers equal to the previous record), Mozambique (62 deaths and 8888 cases), Cape Verde (61 deaths and 6125 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 dead and 2362 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 dead and 911 cases).
