According to the Director General of the INE, José Calengi, all the conditions have been created for the General Population and Housing Census, the second post-independence, to begin.

José Calengi stressed that the challenge is to have all the census material in all the country's provinces by this Monday, stressing that the resources are still being distributed.

The day before the census begins, the official continued, a workshop will be held to launch the census, after all the preparation stages have been completed.

"We will start collecting data from midnight", said José Calegi, explaining that, according to the plan, the work will begin with collective institutions and the homeless.

"Naturally, the favourable and suggested time, from a methodological point of view, to facilitate this registration, will be exactly midnight", he stressed.

The Director-General of the INE stressed that 79,423 census agents are mobilised and being prepared for this exercise, who will collect the data.

The official stressed that "this work requires some sacrifice" and the census agents will be compensated with snacks and an allowance, based on what has been practiced by the INE.

"It is important to emphasize that the collection will be carried out in all homes in the country (...), we urge national and foreign citizens to welcome our agents", he added.

According to the Director-General of the INE, the process will take place over 30 days, urging people to plan to receive the census agents, stressing that "this information is confidential and will be treated on the basis of statistical secrecy".

The executive made available around 30 billion kwanzas for the 2024 census, whose motto is "Together we count for Angola".

In 2023, the INE estimated that Angola would have a population of around 35.1 million inhabitants in the year of the second census, 2024, taking into account the birth rate, mortality rate and other factors.

"We have an estimate that goes up to 2050 and, for 2024, we estimate a population of around 35,121,734 inhabitants, taking into account the birth rate, mortality rate and other factors associated with the calculation of this projection", said the director-general of the INE at the time, adding that the population growth rate is around 3 percent, with an average annual growth of 922 thousand inhabitants.

The last General Census of the Population and Housing of Angola was carried out between 16 and 31 May 2014 and the final national overall data indicated a national population of over 25.7 million people.

In 2014, the process involved around 105,000 people and a budget of 20 million dollars.

In 1970, five years before the country's independence, Angola had more than five million inhabitants.
